About Robert

I founded Echelon Wealth in 2008 with the sole objective… bringing together all of the experience and expertise available to deliver “Financial strategies that work.”

We use a comprehensive and integrated approach that takes into account your lifestyle, your goals and consider your financial, taxation and investments to maximise your overall financial position.

I have been a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) since 2000; Specialist Self Managed Superannuation Adviser (SSA) since 2006 and a Tax (financial) Adviser.

Our advice is well balanced and pragmatic.

Our expertise is sound and our commercial and investment experience significant. These factors ensure that the strategies we create with you will make a significant difference in how you build your lifetime wealth.

The personal stuff.

Where I am from...

Born in Auckland, New Zealand. (I am an Australian Citizen)…

The first child of Patricia and Andrew - my father a Scotsman and my mum British born. My mum was from an immigrant family; my dad, who was raised in Scotland and served in the Highland Regiment, was travelling the world. They were both young and were seeking a bit of excitement and opportunities for themselves and their family.

Tragically, my father passed away when I was 14 months old.

I was raised, schooled and kept in line by my mother, uncles, aunts and older cousins - it was never lonely.  Looking back, I can see now that we didn’t have much, but what we did have seemed to go the distance. My mother was a great budgeter and I always had a job after school which would normally end up full time during the school holidays. So, I guess that’s where you develop an early appreciation for work, reward and the value of money.

What I enjoy;

I`ve played and love Rugby, barrack for the Western Force, drink good beer and enjoy nice wine and great company. Sailing and travelling to interesting places, scuba diving and cycling, both road and mountain bike, are our favourite pastimes. I`m lucky as I get to sail, scuba dive and cycle with my wife Maree.  Together we have ticked off a few milestones, like the Melbourne to Sydney, Adelaide to Melbourne bike rides; the Gibb River MTB Challenge and the Cape to Cape MTB event. More recently we sailed our yacht "Scarlet Ribbon" in the Fremantle to Bali yacht race and later, a passage through Indonesia to Malaysia.

In the Community;

I'm an active Justice of the Peace; appointed in January 2010. I frequently sit in the Magistrates Court, as well as assisting with the witnessing and swearing of legal documents  - which is both satisfying and pretty handy, at times.

On a professional note;

I started my career with MLC in 1986 and quickly advanced through their financial planning arms. Joining the Financial Planning Association, I completed my Diploma in Financial Planning (Deakin University) and my CFP designation shortly after.

Self Managed Super Funds were a new curiosity in 1996, and I enrolled in any and every course that was available. Formalising my SMSF experience firstly with the Professional Cert in SMSF and Specialist SMSF Adviser designation SSA, I recently upsized this with the completion of the newly minted Grad Cert in SMSF from the University of Adelaide.

Career moments;

In between all of this, I said farewell to MLC and the institutional model of delivering financial advice - it just didn’t seem to be able to keep up that well for our clients.

I founded Echelon Wealth in 2008. Echelon`s point of difference is that we hold our own Australian Financial Services Licence. This means that there is no institutional ownership or influence on the firm. Our focus is completely on our clients and their families. We provide a full-service advice offering, including strategy, planning, compliance and administration, all centred around the Self Managed Super space.

Today our clients are in every state of Australia and have investments all over the world.
